UPDATE 12/31: President Bush has noted something of the extent of U.S. involvement in disaster and humanitarian relief worldwide, just this year alone:
Mr Bush said yesterday that, in 2004, the United States had contributed $2.4 billion (£1.3 billion) in food, funds and humanitarian relief, 40 per cent of the global effort for disasters for the year.
